Miguel Angel Martinez Gonzalez

Dr. Martinez-Gonzalez is a physician, epidemiologist, nutrition researcher, and professor. He is a co-author of the landmark clinical trial known as the PREDIMED study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2013. The study’s findings indicate that adhering to a Mediterranean Diet reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by approximately 30% and also reduces the risk for stroke in high-risk patients. Dr. Martinez-Gonzalez also served as the principal investigator for the SUN Cohort Study, which sought to identify dietary determinants of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and coronary heart disease. The study, published in 2006, supports the benefits of a Mediterranean Diet and olive oil against coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. In addition to conducting research, Dr. Martinez-Gonzalez advises doctoral candidates and serves as a mentor for faculty career development.
