Bridging Gaps for Supermarket Shoppers

February 27-March 1, Dallas, Texas

For the past three years, Oldways has been leading the charge in working with supermarket dietitians by creating an annual event to connect retail dietitians with food companies committed to improving public health. The goal: To look toward the future and find practical, real solutions to improve the health of all Americans.

The theme for the 2013 Oldways Supermarket Dietitian Symposium, held at the lovely Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, Texas, was “Bridging Gaps for Supermarket Shoppers.”

Barbara Ruhs, MS, RD, LDN, helped plan the event. Since 2008 she has been working as part of the sales and merchandising team at Arizona-based Bashas’ Family of Stores in the role of corporate dietitian, and has seen first-hand that dietitian promotions can have a positive impact on sales. She has also seen growing confusion among many dietitians on big nutrition/health topics.

The symposium offered an opportunity for supermarket RDs to network with their peers, share best practices, and bring timely and reliable nutrition advice back to their customers.

Here are a few comments from our dietitian attendees:

“Your symposium was absolutely amazing. I loved the guest list and the chance to share ideas with other RDs and vendors. I also loved all of the exposure, passion, and inspiration. This event re-generated and re-energized my passion for my job!”

“I was hoping for one or two take-home messages and I’m leaving with thirty-six!”

“From the moment I arrived I felt welcome. Every topic was relevant and useful, all so organized, interesting, and helpful. What a group of talented, intelligent, and thoughtful individuals. On top of that, passionate, generous, and funny!”

“My mind is racing, visualizing methods to implement all that I learned.”

“This event is my favorite and most useful in the whole year. I love how quickly the program moves along. You never have time to get bored. And this was the best food ever at a conference.”

And some comments from our vendor partners:

“This was one of the best conferences I’ve been to in years for so many reasons—size of the symposium, ample time to really network with supermarket RDs and so many opportunities to learn!”

“We had an absolutely wonderful time at the event and feel it was such a rewarding experience – all around.  I’m already sharing information with my other clients and teams for consideration next year.”

“This event was a great place to get ideas on how I can better work with supermarket RDs, get contacts, and hear about which vendor/retailer programs are really working.”

“Kudos to the Oldways team and to Barb Ruhs for continuing to pioneer such an important, informative event!

“Such a great event. It gets better every year.”

PRESENTATIONS

The symposium included in-depth sessions with thirty speakers, who shared ideas for promoting better nutrition and healthier food choices in supermarkets.

To share with you the important messages and take aways from this event, we offer copies of some of the speakers’ presentations below. (Several panels were discussion only, without presentations.) Click on the links to download each presentation.

Remember, however, that speakers normally add considerable information orally that is not available in the PDFs; not all presentations will be completely comprehensible without this additional detail.

While we offer these presentations for their educational value, we remind you that these works are copyrighted by each speaker and may not be reproduced without the speaker’s written permission.
