Milk in the Freezer

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Did you know that you can successfully freeze milk?

In her recent book, Mad Hungry: Feeding Men and Boys, Lucinda Scala Quinn, executive food director of Martha Stewart Living, recommends that when you go shopping, you buy milk for the refrigerator, plus one or two more cartons to keep in the freezer. To thaw, place the cartons in the sink for several hours, or, set them in a bowl of hot water if you’re in a hurry. Or, put the frozen carton in the refrigerator at night and you’ll have milk for breakfast.

Don’t try this tip with milk in glass bottles; as the liquid expands during freezing it will crack the bottle. And if you’re a new mother, remember that you can freeze breast milk and keep a supply on hand so a father or babysitter can feed the baby when you’re not home.
