welcome to oldways, food issues think tank

OldWays - Food Issues Think Tank helping consumers make wise food choices for life!

High Five! is a professionally designed 8-lesson curriculum that wakens children's excitement and interest in food. It teaches children about healthy eating, simple cooking, and cultural models for meals. The lessons are organized and easily followed so that anyone - parent, teacher, or others interested in children, food, cooking and health - can teach High Five.

Oldways created High-Five! to combat the current lack of education provided to children about healthy eating. Parents who are now in their thirties, forties, and fifties took home economics courses in grade school and high school. Today very few American children are even offered home economics. Instead, America's children are served processed foods from major fast food chains in school cafeterias, and offered sweet and salty junk food and cola drinks from hallway vending machines.

American school children no longer receive regular and up-to-date instruction about their food and where it comes from, or about the relationships between healthy eating and lifelong good health. Nor are they taught about the basics of cooking, kitchen safety, and hygiene. American children are subjected to an avalanche of information about food in the mass media. The average American school-age child watches 10,000 television advertisements every year that promote fast food, junk food, highly processed food, and flavored sugar water.

This curriculum can help educate the youth of today to establish a dietary pattern to last them a lifetime, and offers them tools to combat the onslaught of misinformation, advertising, and poor food options sometimes made available.
