Susan Herrmann Loomis: Nuts in the Kitchen
The French Cultural Center, Oldways Preservation Trust, and The Culinary Guild of New England teamed up to host Susan Herrmann Loomis, a renowned cookbook author and fabulous cooking teacher, while she was in Boston for just one night to to promote her most recent cookbook, Nuts in the Kitchen. She demonstrated some techniques from her book, talked about her life in France, signed books at a post demo wine reception, and even gave guests a taste of her terrific Brazil nut pesto!

Mediterranean Month
Oldways and the Mediterranean Foods Alliance celebrated their second annual Mediterranean Month with loads of activities, cooking contests, and new resources for consumers and health professionals!

Adelaide Food Summit, Tasting Australia, South Australia
Oldways hosted the Adelaide Food Summit, a 2-day event held during the Tasting Australia week. The Summit was created to promote and increase culinary tourism in South Australia as well as help tourism operators and business community to grow their businesses. May 3rd featured a half-day program highlighting information for culinary, wine, and travel media professionals. May 4th brought a day of sessions and informational meetings, specialized for business owners including food producers and distributors, farmers markets, wine cellars and wineries, restaurants, hotels, cooking schools, and gourmet retreats.

Camembert and Calvados: An Oldways Culinaria, Honfleur and Bayeux, France
On April 25th, Oldways traveled to France for an unforgettable tour of the culinary and historic delights of lower Normandy. They visited fish and vegetable markets, bakeries and local producers, and enjoyed lively cooking demonstrations while gaining an appreciation for the customs, traditions, and personalities that combine to create extraordinary local specialties.

Wild Yukon Salmon Seminar and Reception, Harvard Faculty Club, Cambridge, MA, 2-6 pm
On March 12th, Oldways and Kwikpak Fisheires LLC teamed up to forge on in building the Oldways Traditional American Table initiative at an afternoon scientific and culinary seminar followed by a reception and tasting. Participants learned about the remarkably healthy and exquisite-tasting Wild Yukon River salmon, and about the traditional, sustainable fishing methods still used by Yup’ik tribe in Alaska. Speakers included Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D. Dr.P.H., Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School; Humphrey and Ellen Keyes and Matilda Oktoyuk, Traditional Fishermen, Yup’ik Tribe, Emmonak, AK; Jack Schultheis, General Manager of Kwik’pak Fisheries and K.Dun Gifford, President, Oldways, Boston, MA.

Truth About Wine: An International Scientific Workshop, Castello di Grinzane Cavour, Italy
Oldways participated in an educational and culinary workshop, organized by The National Conservatory for the Conscious Consumption of Wine (Osservatorio Nazionale per il Consumo Consapevole del Vino), to further explore the newest findings about the link between appropriate wine consumption and good health—Click here to see La Carta di Grinzane Cavour -- the Consensus Statement produced during the workshop.

Cooking Class and Italian Dinner, Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, FL
On the 15th, Dun and Sara will lead an afternoon cooking class course, “Mediterranean Magic,” demonstrating how to make traditional and simple Mediterranean fare, with recipes from The Oldways Table, including Bulgur Salad with Oregano, Feta Cheese, and Cucumbers, Orecchiette Con Cime Di Rape, Edamame Beans with Olive Oil, Mediterranean Tapenade, Skewers of Marinated Crete Spring Lamb with Artichokes & Lemons, and Chocolate Sauce Royale. The following evening, Dun will host a dinner in the Club’s Italian Dinner Series, featuring dishes from the regions of Puglia, Liguria, Tuscany, and Campania.

On December 9, the Oldways team was on site with Brooklyn-based Acme Smoked Fish, Kwik’pak Fisheries of Emmonak, Alaska, and famed restaurateur Eli Zabar to introduce a new and unique limited-edition whitefish called Golden Smoked Bering Cisco at Zabar’s New York City hotspot, E.A.T.

A Pre-Congress Symposia at the International Congress of Nutrition (ICN 2009).
In Bangkok, Oldways organized a four-hour Pre-Congress Seminar, "Effective Solutions for Healthy Lifestyles." With speakers from Thailand, China and the US, the focus of our seminar was the concept of "Management not Banishment" as a key solution for healthy lifestyles.
