The Oldways team will assemble a group of the nation’s leading supermarket dietitians in Savannah, Georgia, February 29–March 3, 2012, for the 2nd Annual Supermarket Dietitian Symposium. This event brings industry representatives together with an important group of dietitians for three days of networking and an opportunity to share best practices and discuss ways to truly improve public health through effective consumer communications. ► Oldways Culinaria: Turkey's Culinary Heritage with Ana Sortun and Oldways
March 17–25, 2012, Gazientep and Istanbul, Turkey
Join Ana Sortun and Oldways in Turkey for a week-long journey as Ana rediscovers her culinary roots.  First, we'll visit Gazientep, a city in southeastern Anatolia, a region famous for pistachios, baklava, copperware and for its important contribution to Turkish cuisine.  And, since a trip to Turkey isn't complete without a stop in  Istanbul, we'll focus on the other regional cuisines of Turkey during our time in this mesmerizing city. 2011

The Scientific Consensus about the Healthy Pasta Meal
Symposium session at the 11th European Nutrition Conference - Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS)
October 28, 2011, Madrid, Spain
Oldways presented a two-hour scientific symposium during the four-day FENS Conference in Madrid. With a focus on healthy pasta meals, the symposium session shared the details of the 2010 Scientific Consensus Statement on the Healthy Pasta Meal, and in particular, pasta's role in a healthy total diet, weight loss and management, increased consumption of vegetables and other healthy foods and affordability. World Pasta Day
October 25, 2011 - Everywhere
As always, Oldways celebrated World Pasta Day with pasta makers and families around the world. This event doesn't require travel or registration. Every year we encourage everyone to celebrate World Pasta Day in a local restaurant or at home by either cooking your favorite pasta dish, or by trying a new pasta recipe. 

► Italian Food, Wine and the Arts:  A Collaborative Exhibition with Tastings
September 17, September 22, October 6 and October 22, 2011, Boston and Newton, MA
Do you love the foods of Italy, wine, and the arts? Oldways held a series of special events at the Martha Richardson Fine Art Gallery and Bellezza Home & Garden to introduce the beautiful Italian food, wine, and watercolor paintings of artist Suzanne Heller, which are featured in Faith Heller Willinger’s cookbook, Adventures of an Italian Food Lover (available at the Oldways Bookstore).  Suzanne's paintings were shown in both the Martha Richardson Fine Art Gallery (38 Newbury Street, 4th floor, in Boston) and Patti Kraft's Belezza Home & Garden (1021 Boylston Street [Route 9 Westbound], Newton, MA) between September 17 and October 22, 2011.  
 
Oldways and our friends organized three tastings to celebrate the exhibition of Suzanne's stunning watercolors, with three of Boston's most exciting food and wine experts:

American Dietetic Association (ADA) Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo
September 24–27 2011, San Diego, CA
Oldways exhibited at the ADA's  annual conference in order to connect with dietitians from around the country. Oldways representatives were available throughout the conference to spread the word about The Mediterranean Foods Alliance, The Whole Grains Council, and our other educational efforts and programs.

Whole Grain Forum
April 20-21, 2011, Beijing, China

Oldways and the Whole Grains Council collaborated with China's Public Nutrition Development Center (PNDC) to present a Whole Grain Forum in Beijing. As China embarks on a major campaign to promote whole grains, the WGC will be working with PNDC to establish whole grain definitions and labeling regulations and to encourage the Whole Grain Stamp as a trusted standard in China. Click here for more details and to download selected presentations.

2011 Supermarket Dietitian Symposium
March 30 - April 2, 2011, Santa Rosa, CA

Supermarket dietitians and other food industry professionals joined forces at the Oldways 2011 Supermarket Dietitian Symposium March 30 to April 2 in Santa Rosa, California, to develop solutions to address our nation's health and obesity crisis.  By invitation, approximately 40 retail dietitians from across the nation came together to share ideas and strategies to improve healthy eating and purchase behavior in our nation's leading grocery stores. Whole Grains: the New Norm Conference
January 31 - February 2, 2011, Portland, OR

Whole grains are becoming the default – the new norm – in a wide range of contexts, from schools to grocery aisles. Our 2011 Whole Grains Council conference showcased the great momentum of whole grains, including sessions on the psychology of social norms, the basics of the new Dietary Guidelines (released on the day our conference started) and the latest research on health and whole grains. 2010

Safe and Balanced Nutrition
November 2, Kiev, Ukraine

Oldways organized two one-day conferences for health professionals, nutrition researchers, government officials and media in the Ukraine and Republic of Georgia.  Co-organized with the Ukrainian Research Institute of Nutrition (Kiev, Ukraine) and the Petre Shotadze Tblisi Medical Academy (Tblisi, Georgia), the conferences provided a portrait of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle, including balanced nutrition, calorie and weight management, food safety issues, and hydration.  Each topic was covered by international and local speakers, thereby giving local context to the big picture. 

Healthy Pasta Meals  (A Scientific Consensus Conference) in conjunction with IV World Pasta Congress and World Pasta Day
October 25-26 2010, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
On World Pasta Day -- October 25, 2010 -- in Rio de Janeiro, Oldways and the International Pasta Organization (IPO), organized a meeting of scientists from 13 countries to discuss nutrition and healthy pasta meals.  The result was a new Scientific Consensus Statement about Healthy Pasta Meals – the first since 2004 – confirming the nutrition science that pasta meals are part of an overall healthy diet and that carbohydrate foods, like pasta meals, do not cause obesity.

Susan Herrmann Loomis: Nuts in the Kitchen

The French Cultural Center, Oldways Preservation Trust, and The Culinary Guild of New England teamed up to host Susan Herrmann Loomis, a renowned cookbook author and fabulous cooking teacher, while she was in  Boston for just one night to to promote her most recent cookbook, Nuts in the Kitchen. She demonstrated some techniques from her book, talked about her life in France, signed books at a post demo wine reception, and even gave guests a taste of her terrific Brazil nut pesto!

Mediterranean Month
May 1 - 31, 2010, worldwide
Oldways and the Mediterranean Foods Alliance celebrated their second annual Mediterranean Month with loads of activities, cooking contests, and new resources for consumers and health professionals!

Adelaide Food Summit, Tasting Australia
May 5 - 6, 2010
, South Australia
Oldways hosted the Adelaide Food Summit, a 2-day event held during the Tasting Australia week. The Summit was created to promote and increase culinary tourism in South Australia as well as help tourism operators and business community to grow their businesses. May 3rd featured a half-day program highlighting information for culinary, wine, and travel media professionals. May 4th brought a day of sessions and informational meetings, specialized for business owners including food producers and distributors, farmers markets, wine cellars and wineries, restaurants, hotels, cooking schools, and gourmet retreats.

 

Camembert and Calvados: An Oldways Culinaria
April 25 - May 2, 2010 , Honfleur and Bayeux, France
On April 25th, Oldways traveled to France for an unforgettable tour of the culinary and historic delights of lower Normandy. They visited fish and vegetable markets, bakeries and local producers, and enjoyed lively cooking demonstrations while gaining an appreciation for the customs, traditions, and personalities that combine to create extraordinary local specialties.

Wild Yukon Salmon Seminar and Reception
March 12, 2010, Cambridge, MA
On March 12th, Oldways and
Kwikpak Fisheries LLC teamed up to forge on in building the Oldways Traditional American Table initiative at an afternoon scientific and culinary seminar followed by a reception and tasting at the Harvard Faculty Club. Participants learned about the remarkably healthy and exquisite-tasting Wild Yukon River salmon, and about the traditional, sustainable fishing methods still used by Yup’ik tribe in Alaska. Speakers included Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D. Dr.P.H., Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School; Humphrey and Ellen Keyes and Matilda Oktoyuk, Traditional Fishermen, Yup’ik Tribe, Emmonak, AK; Jack Schultheis, General Manager of Kwik’pak Fisheries and K.Dun Gifford, President, Oldways, Boston, MA.

The Truth About Wine: An International Scientific Workshop
February 5 & 6, 2010, Castello di Grinzane Cavour, Italy              
Oldways participated in an educational and culinary workshop, organized by The National Conservatory for the Conscious Consumption of Wine (Osservatorio Nazionale per il Consumo Consapevole del Vino), to further explore the newest findings about the link between appropriate wine consumption and good health—

Cooking Class and Italian Dinner
February 15th and 16th, 2010, Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, FL
On the 15th, Dun and Sara will lead an afternoon cooking class course, “Mediterranean Magic,” demonstrating how to make traditional and simple Mediterranean fare, with recipes from The Oldways Table, including Bulgur Salad with Oregano, Feta Cheese, and Cucumbers, Orecchiette Con Cime Di Rape, Edamame Beans with Olive Oil, Mediterranean Tapenade, Skewers of Marinated Crete Spring Lamb with Artichokes & Lemons, and Chocolate Sauce Royale. The following evening, Dun will host a dinner in the Club’s Italian Dinner Series, featuring dishes from the regions of Puglia, Liguria, Tuscany, and Campania.

2009

Bering Cisco Whitefish Event
December 9, 2009, New York, NY
On December 9, the Oldways team was on site with Brooklyn-based
Acme Smoked Fish, Kwik’pak Fisheries of Emmonak, Alaska, and famed restaurateur Eli Zabar to introduce a new and unique limited-edition whitefish called Golden Smoked Bering Cisco at Zabar’s New York City hotspot, E.A.T.

World Pasta Day: Scientific and Culinary Conference

Oldways presented the updated science of healthy pasta meals, to health professionals and media at this conference, as well as intriguing segment on Pasta Memories and a cooking demonstration.

Effective Solutions for Promoting Healthy Lifestyles

A Pre-Congress Symposia at the International Congress of Nutrition (ICN 2009).
In Bangkok, Oldways organized a four-hour Pre-Congress Seminar, "Effective Solutions for Healthy Lifestyles." With speakers from Thailand, China and the US, the focus of our seminar was the concept of "Management not Banishment" as a key solution for healthy lifestyles.
